From July 31 through August 11, 2024, the Low group organized the 'Quantum + Chips' summer school at the University of Minnesota, attended by 50 undergraduate students from the U.S. (30) and Korea (20). This program aims to inspire a new generation of scientists passionate about solving the most challenging problems in computing devices and to prepare a skilled technical workforce through education rooted in materials and device co-design principles, combined with innovative and immersive experiences.

The 'Quantum + Chips' initiative includes a series of summer and winter schools targeting undergraduate students. Launched in 2023, these schools feature expertly curated lectures delivered by the Low group and team, computer labs, experimental lab tours, company visits, and invited talks from leading semiconductor companies. This year, a new team-based 'hackathon' was introduced, where small student groups tackled challenging problems in fields such as quantum mechanics, silicon technology, spintronics, and quantum computing. The hackathon encouraged students to engage deeply and independently with these subjects.

The program also seeks to establish an ecosystem connecting a broad network of aspiring students to local industries and beyond, with support from participating industry sponsors, including Intel, Skywater, 3M, Seagate, Quantinuum, and Google.
